Cricket – Year 9

Wednesday afternoon, the year 9 team assembled excitedly in the playground, ready to travel to Chiswick park for my favourite fixture of the year.

The sun was beating down, and the gentle breeze wafting through the trees surrounding the perfect pitch reminded me of a similar day last year which resulted in a great victory. Could it happen again?

We opened the batting, and quickly settled in, making some quick singles and a couple of boundaries. We then lost our first two batsmen in the same over, and it was up to our middle order to rescue the game. Things went sour when the next pair were dismissed in 4 balls, leaving a 7 batsmen who made only one run between them in the last match to save our bacon.

Sumeet Gabrie stepped up and made 3 boundaries off 5 balls, and went on to make 20 not out. Raj Wasan made 7 hard fought runs which he dedicates to Ed Hillyard.

We ended the innings 65 for 5.

Chiswick came out strong, making some quick singles and a succession of boundaries to go 25-0 in 4 overs. David De Oliveira then made one of the finest catches I have seen to send their number one batsmen walking. A lack of leadership at the crease led to two run outs, and then a savage bowling attack left Chiswick needing 16 runs off the final over.

They didn’t make it. Lampton won by 4 runs.

Congratulations to the team.
