Forget Spain. There is another team out there who are dominating and destroying the opposition. That team is the Lampton School Year 8 Cricket Team.
On a sunny yet blustery Thursday evening the team once again showed why they are being talked about in the same breath as the great West Indian teams of the 1970/80s. Lampton steamrollered the opposition and romped to a fantastic 79 run victory over a much fancied team from Cranford School.
New captain Nikhil Vadhera lost the toss and Lampton were put into bat on what looked like a tricky wicket for batting. The opening pair of Mihir and Mahesh made a great start and made mincemeat of the Cranford bowling. A slight lapse of concentration from Mihir led to him being dismissed for 6 runs. But this meant no let up for Cranford as the in-form Kavir stepped up and promptly smashed 39 runs. At the other end the out of form Mahesh (whose place had been put at risk due to a poor run of scores) was showing the crowd that form is temporary, yet class is permanent. This pair batting out the remaining overs and Lampton finished with a phenomenal 108-1 of 15 overs.
The pressure was on Cranford and they needed to get off to a good start. Any hope of such a start was crushed by a hostile opening spell from Mihir and Kavir. A combination of excellent bowling and fielding (4 run outs in the innings!) meant after 4 overs Cranford were 7-4. Nikhil, Mahesh, Shivam and Junayd bowled well to restrict the Cranford batsmen who wilted under the pressure and were eventually dismissed for 29.
Special mention should be made to Billie Ruiz (7S) and Vikram Kapoor (8P) who were last minute calls up. Billie just happened to be walking across Lampton Park on her way home, but played the whole game. Legend. Congratulations to the team – Mahesh, Mihir, Kavir, Nikhil (Captain), Shivam, Junayd, Csaba (wk), Vikram, Azim, Shray, Billie.
