Lampton School - Week 25

Posted on Mar 20th 2023

Dear Parents, Carers and Students,

Welcome to our newsletter for the eleventh week of the Spring Term 2023. It’s Week A, and our whole school assemblies have been led by Ms Mahmoud and students about Ramadan. Our character theme for this final fortnight of the Spring Term is ‘team work.’

As we enter the final timetable cycle of Weeks A and B it’s important that we use every minute of the time remaining of this term to focus on learning. In particular, Y11 and Y13 must capitalise on these last two weeks because the Public Examinations will be upon us shortly after the Easter break. School will finish at 12.30pm for all students on 31st March with normal timetabled lessons taking place that morning as usual.

I am pleased to report that attendance at the whole school level continues to be above both the Hounslow and National average at 94.2%. It is imperative that students aim for their own individual attendance to be at least 95% - every session missed has an impact on academic success. With respect to punctuality, both to school and lessons throughout the day, every minute counts. Students arriving after the register closes in the morning are marked absent, so poor punctuality means that an individual's attendance figure is lowered. Families will continue to receive text messages giving your child/children's attendance figure - please make time to discuss the message  with them.

With best wishes for the week ahead.

Magistrates’ Court competition success

A shout to our Year 9 Magistrates’ Court competition team - who excelled on Saturday in a highly competitive field vying with eight other schools to showcase their debating skills. Coached by Mr Batten, students showed the ability to formally and fluently argue their case, and to think on their feet to respond to the questions from their opponents. Although the Lampton team ultimately were the runners up (with the team from Nonsuch Grammar winning), the judges were at pains to point out just how close the result was, and how our students had distinguished themselves. Many thanks to Mr Batten for offering such excellent preparation for legal careers to our students!

Safeguarding bulletin

With the rise in knife crime in recent years, we know that parents and carers will be concerned about how to keep young people safe. We share your concern, and work with the Metropolitan Police to educate young people about the risks of carrying a knife, and to report on concerns where the law has been broken. The school has a zero tolerance approach to knives or any other weapons being brought into school.

This letter from the Metropolitan Police and Hounslow Education Partnership contains important information for parents. In school, we educate students about the dangers of knives both in PSHE and in assembly. A reminder that as a school, from time to time and in collaboration with the police we will search all students using ‘knife arches’ and ‘knife wands’. Where we have cause to suspect that a student is carrying a knife, we will also search a student following guidance in our behaviour policy. It is exceptionally rare that students bring knives to school, but it is important to be clear that in all cases where a knife is brought to school the incident will be reported to the police and action taken under the behaviour and exclusions policies.

If you would like further information, the Ben Kinsella trust runs online workshops for parents and carers. If you have concerns about the safety of a young person, please do not hesitate to contact the safeguarding team safeguarding@lampton.org.uk.

Basketball borough final
