Lampton School - Week 9

Posted on Nov 6th 2023

Monday 6th November

Dear Parents, Carers and Students,

Welcome to our newsletter for the ninth week of the Autumn Term 2023. It’s Week A and our whole school assemblies on the theme of ‘Remembrance’ are being led by Mr Pavey (Assistant Headteacher). As I said last week, we are  using this as an opportunity to remember all innocent and civilian victims of conflict throughout the world, including the Middle East and Ukraine at this time.

Y11 have some PPEs remaining at the start of this week, but the bulk of these exams have been completed with normal lessons now being resumed. Thursday of this week (9th November) sees our Sixth Form Open Evening taking place from 5 - 7pm. Another key date is Parents’ Evening on Thursday 14th December.

Our new punctuality system commenced on 1st November and is working well - proving a good reminder to students of the importance of being on time to school and to lessons - living the Lampton values of respect and integrity and the character trait of responsibility.

There are a number of important enrichment updates below together with medical, SEND and punctuality reminders - please take time to remind yourself of these. Also, with regard to communicating with school, please see this link to the website which highlights the process of getting to talk to the right people in a timely way.

With best wishes for the week ahead.

Contacting staff

A reminder that if you wish to contact staff, we strongly advise you to contact the member of staff by email in the first instance. Contact details for relevant staff can be accessed on this page: https://www.lampton.org.uk/809/communicating-with-staff. Please bear in mind that all staff have various other commitments throughout the school day, and may take up to two working days to respond to your email. If there is an urgent safeguarding issue, please either contact us by phone or email safeguarding@lampton.org.uk. If you wish to meet a member of staff in person, please ensure that a meeting is arranged in advance - this is much more likely to lead to a positive resolution of any issues.

Punctuality

Positive attendance and punctuality is very important. There is a direct link between absence and attainment and therefore we expect all our students to attend at 96% or above and be on time. Students with stronger attendance and punctuality records achieve better results at KS4 than those who miss education. Therefore, we are now operating a daily community service system for students who are late to either registration or lessons. This will take place in the Hall at the end of the day for thirty minutes (this includes students with fewer minutes late). Students complete tasks which help them reflect on the importance of punctuality and how they can be responsible for being on time. Families are contacted on the day if their child has been issued with a late community service sanction.

Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge - Y10

Last week all Year 10 students took part in the Jack Petchey Speak Out - a full day of workshops to upskill students in the art of public speaking. Students were encouraged to develop a talk to their peers about a topic that feel passionate about, and deliver it in a way that advocates their ideas and persuades others of their logic. Please do check in with your Y10 student to find out more about their own speech!

Your Life Your Choice - Y8

This Thursday 9th November we are hosting the annual Your Life, Your Choice event for our Year 8 students. Students will be off timetable all day on Thursday and will attend a variety of workshops led by serving staff from the Met Police and London Ambulance Service. The focus is on equipping students with the knowledge and skills to make better decisions in difficult situations, to help keep themselves and others safe.

Interested in getting into teaching?

Applications for training to teach in the LWA ITT, in partnership with the University of Roehampton, are now open. We have many training routes available, both fee-paying and salaried, in a wide variety of secondary subjects. Please check our website for details of our Get Into Teaching events over the next few months as well as information on how to apply: https://www.lwaitt.org.uk

If you could also pass this information on to any friends or family you know who might be interested in training to teach starting in September 2024, we would be very grateful.

Please also consider sparing a minute to follow us on X (Twitter) and/or Instagram, that would really help spread the word about our teacher training. Our handle for both is @LDNwestalliance.
