Lampton School News - Week 33

Posted on Jun 5th 2023

Monday 5th June

Dear Parents, Carers and Students,

Welcome to our newsletter for the seventh week of the Summer Term 2023 - the first week of our academic year at Lampton School. I am pleased to report that students have returned in a focused way this morning to start the new academic year.

It’s week A and our assemblies are focusing on the importance of making an excellent start to the new year and the new opportunities open to all members of our community. In particular, we will be re-visiting our behaviour routines and our mantra of ‘high challenge - high support’. Please see the details below and discuss these with your child/children.

On Wednesday 7th June we are pleased to be hosting this year’s ‘First Give’ final celebrating the excellent philanthropic work undertaken with local charities by our new Y10 students. I’m looking forward to hearing the speeches of the finalists! My thanks to Mr Ramgi and the PSHE team for their hard work in facilitating this event.

As we start the new school year,  a reminder that full school uniform (including blazers and formal school shoes) must be worn to and from school each morning - this is a non-negotiable expectation for all students at Lampton. The only jewellery that is acceptable is that of accepted religious significance. Also, it is important that students do not wear ‘fake’ nails - these are a health and safety risk, especially in PE lessons.

With best wishes for the year ahead and a successful new academic year 2023-2024!

Stephen Davis

Safeguarding briefing - cost of living crisis

We are acutely aware of the very real pressures that the cost of living crisis is creating for families. As a school, we reviewed our uniform policy last year to ensure that uniforms represent best value. We are aware that children often desire ‘high status’ designer goods, and rigorously enforce our rules to ensure that students do not wear branded trainers, other sportswear or jewellery to school. More information can be found on our uniform page. Earlier on this academic year, we shared information on support available for families who are struggling financially. We also operate a foodbank in school. If you would like to donate please send your child in with suggested items or make a donation via ParentPay so that we replenish supplies. Students can pick up food packages visiting the Safeguarding Office. We also have a uniform exchange - where students can pick up donated items (that have been laundered). If your child is in Year 11, we would appreciate it if you could donate uniform items that are no longer needed on the date of your child’s last exam.

If you are concerned about your child’s safety or wellbeing because of this or any other issue, please do not hesitate to contact the safeguarding team safeguarding@lampton.org.uk.

Arrangements for Year 11 study leave

As Year 11 students are now officially on study leave, students need only to attend school for their examinations. Students must attend the pre-exam briefings - and so arrive on site by 8.20am or 12.50pm for morning / afternoon exams. Students must continue to wear full school uniform and bring their ID, and observe the school's behaviour policy in all regards.

Where students have a morning and afternoon examination, we will be making study facilities available in the library and 6th Form building. Students are expected to stay on site, unless parents / carers have contacted Ms Virdi (kvirdi@lampton.org.uk) to say that they have permission to return home between examinations. Lunch will be available in the dining room from 12.20pm, ensuring that Year 11 students are served first.

Throughout the exam season, we will be making study facilities available in the library should students want to revise on site. Students may use the library's silent study area, where they will have access to PCs or can continue to revise using paper-based resources.

This half term is crucial for students: you should expect to see your son/ daughter revise for at least five hours per day. Our message to students in yesterday's leavers' assembly was clear - hard work now will pay off later!

Hounslow Borough Athletics report

On Thursday 18th of May, 18 students from year 9 represented Lampton School at the Hounslow Borough Athletics championships held at Osterley Sports Centre. On a day where the sun was out the Lampton lions athletes certainly shone brightly displaying great athleticism, courage and sportsmanship in all of their events - please see photos here. Some highlights from the day included:

● Blessing winning her 100m final and helping the girls relay team into the final with a commanding final leg of the 4x100m.

● Jeremiah S winning the boys Long Jump with a huge leap of 5.10M in addition to his excellent efforts in the sprints and relays.

● David I earning 2nd place for his heat of the 300m and a courageous 2nd leg of the boys' relay final to give the team a fighting chance.

Overall, it was a successful day for Lampton. All students should be proud of their efforts and should be congratulated on representing the school with pride against other schools in the Hounslow Borough. Thank you to Miss Newman and the PE department for organising the team and we look forward to seeing our year 7/8 students compete at their Borough carnival after half term.

London Regional Final of the Magistrates’ Court Mock Trial Competition

Lampton Students competed in the London Regional Final of the highly prestigious magistrates’ court mock trial competition on Saturday 27th May . We were up against five other schools - Colchester County High School, Queen Elizabeth’s School, Nonsuch High School for Girls, Highworth Grammar School and Ebbw Fawr Learning Community who had travelled in from Wales!

In the first trial, we defended successfully against Queen Elizabeth's; in the second, Colchester - the ultimate winners - defended successfully against us (in the prosecution role). The presiding magistrate in both of our trials was Jim Sturman KC, famous for representing Colin Stagg over many years in the Rachel Nickell murder case.

We had a lean team with lawyers to match anyone's. The team can be very proud of themselves: they reached the top six out of 200 teams nationwide, according to the competition organiser.

A special mention should go to Malak A, who joined the team after the regional final. Without her participation we wouldn't have had enough students to put forward a team. A big thank you to Mr Batten for arranging the opportunity and helping coach our budding legal team!
