Lampton School Newsletter: Week 9 2024-25

Posted on Nov 4th 2024

Monday 4th November 2024

Dear Parents, Carers and Students,

Welcome to our newsletter for the ninth week of the Autumn Term 2024. I hope that you all had a restful half-term break and that those members of our community who celebrated Diwali last week had an enjoyable time.

It’s Week A and Mr Pavey (Assistant Headteacher), is leading our assemblies on the theme of Remembrance - including the observance of two minutes silence. While we remember past conflicts, we remember those living in places of conflict at the current time too, especially the Middle East and Ukraine.

Y13 and Y11 completed their first round of pre-public examinations (PPEs) just before the half-term break and will be receiving their results and feedback from teachers in the coming weeks. It really is essential that this information is taken onboard by students in order to maximise their chances of future success next summer.

Today and tomorrow Y10 students are taking part in the Jack Petchy ‘Speak Out’ public speaking competition, honing their public speaking skills with professional coaches. On Thursday we will welcome a theatre group who will be performing Macbeth for all of Y11 to support preparation for their GCSE English Literature course and a group of Y13 students have been in Washington DC with the Talent Foundry organisation observing the final days of the US Presidential Election campaign. A busy time for enrichment and personal development at Lampton.

With the clocks having moved back it is now darker in the evenings. The school site closes for students at 5pm, so no students should be on-site after this time. Independent Learning Support, Community Service and Department Restoratives all finish before 4pm and you will receive notification about this for your child in advance. Please also remind your child of the importance of road safety as it is at this time of the year that accidents increase and we want all members of our community to come to and from school safely.

With best wishes for the week ahead.

Stephen Davis

Headteacher

Attendance

If your child has declining attendance they will be spoken to by their form tutor. The purpose of this is to assess whether there is anything we can do as a school to support them and improve their attendance. If there are concerns you have or any questions about attendance please liaise with the Attendance Officer- Ms Emberson, Attendance Lead- Ms Virdi or myself, Ms Kapila. We want to help you if required to ensure your child is maximising their learning time and making progress socially and academically. Our clear process is below, please check the SIMS App for attendance information. Last half term we rewarded 40 students with amazon vouchers for excellent attendance. This is an initiative we will continue this half term. We have 770 students with 96% attendance and above which is outstanding.

Attendence

Behaviour

Department Restoratives have now moved to the 6th form building where there is a more formal process to support students to reflect and make sustained changes. You will receive an email of the form completed by your child and their subject teacher. Targets have been discussed and agreed with the focus being on your child staying in lessons. Persistent removal of children from lessons will mean that your child’s Head of Year will be in contact to arrange a meeting to discuss how we can support your child to make changes that will benefit them.

Lampton Students in the USA

Trump or Harris? How will this presidential election shape American politics for years to come? Four of our Lampton students: Reuel, Bhavanveer, Yusuf and Diyan have had the opportunity to travel to the US for the presidential election by winning the Talent Foundry’s Inspire US competition and through their persistence with their own BreatheEasy Campaign, they will gain a valuable insight into American politics. From Washington DC to Pennsylvania, they've been campaigning for the Democratic Party and visited world-famous places such as the White House.

Across their travels, they've witnessed the political atmosphere in the US and voter behaviour alongside mentorship with figures such as Andy Bookless, one of the most sought-after campaigners in US politics. You can follow their campaign here and here
